europa harnesses the power of invention with Leonardo launch

Europa Worldwide Group is counting down to the launch of its revolutionary, bespoke £1.7m IT solution, Leonardo.

In just 100 days, LeoRoad, the first phase of the long-term programme will roll-out - the conclusion to the company’s biggest IT investment in over 35 years.

Two years in the making, LeoRoad will enhance Europa’s road freight operations. It will go live in the summer, following an extensive development programme by the company’s dedicated team of nine in-house IT designers and engineers, over more than 2,000 man days. A fully bespoke system, tailor-made to meet the needs of Europa’s customers and its evolving business, LeoRoad will further improve responsiveness, efficiency, productivity and future scalability across all 11 UK sites.

Following rigorous performance and scenario testing, wide-spread training will take place for all Europa employees before the launch of LeoRoad, and dedicated support will be provided across all sites following the rollout, including the implementation of a dedicated Leonardo support line for staff.

As the first launch in the Leonardo programme, LeoRoad requires a major infrastructure refresh - upgrading or replacing PCs for over 500 members of staff in the UK and introducing much powerful server hardware. Requiring further investment of £400k, the new setup will provide employees with a consistent and faster desktop experience, allowing them to hot desk and work from any location.

Richard Litchfield, IT Director, said: “This is a huge scale operation and one we have taken complete responsibility for from the beginning. Designing and implementing a completely bespoke system is by no means the easiest solution, but it is by far the best. We’ve been able to take control of the project, deliver it on time and create something that completely meets the needs of our businesses and that of our customers. It can evolve as we need it to, over time, so it has futureproofed Europa. Leonardo will have an incredibly positive impact – one that will be felt across the business and we’re excited to get LeoRoad off the ground and seeing it in action.”

LeoRoad will include proactive operational monitoring of shipments, discrepancy management, customer and partner daily reporting, transit delay announcements (due to weather and other issues) among many more. The system will also be fully integrated with both CCTV and Europa’s new national telephone system.

Andrew Baxter, Managing Director of Europa, said: “The launch of this first phase of Leonardo follows a period of significant change within Europa including the move to Dartford and the launch of 1hub – which in themselves were incredibly demanding for the IT team. Despite that, this project has been the life-blood of our team for the past two years and it is a testament to their commitment and skill that we are in the final countdown to the launch of a completely bespoke system. One that will reap fantastic benefits for the business and our customers.”

Ultimately the Leonardo project will see the firm’s operations, finance and sales systems completely transformed – benefitting customers, European and UK partners. The long-term goal is to provide a fully integrated, end-to-end management system, working across Europa’s entire organisation, providing a fully harmonised system across the branches and partner network.
