China’s Golden Week holiday: What does it mean for air and sea freight?

As we approach one of the most significant events in the Asian logistics calendar, we’d like to remind customers of the impact that China’s Golden Week holiday can have on both air and sea freight movements.

Golden Week officially runs from 1 October – 7 October 2026, with many factories, suppliers and logistics providers closing or operating with reduced staffing levels before and after the holiday period. Industry guidance indicates that disruption can extend well beyond the official holiday dates, particularly due to the close proximity of the Mid-Autumn Festival in late September.

What to expect

  • Factory shutdowns and reduced production schedules across China.
  • Increased pressure on air freight capacity and ocean vessel space before the holiday.
  • Earlier cargo receiving dates (CRDs) and documentation cut-offs.
  • Potential blank sailings, rolled containers and schedule adjustments.
  • Congestion and backlogs continuing into mid-October as operations return to normal.

Key shipping advice

To minimise disruption, we strongly recommend:

  • Finalise production plans now for any cargo required before or shortly after Golden Week.
  • Book freight capacity as early as possible throughout September, particularly for time-sensitive shipments.
  • Speak with your Europa contact regarding the latest CRD and vessel cut-off dates, as these are expected to be brought forward by carriers and can vary significantly by origin, carrier and service.
  • Allow additional transit time for cargo departing in the second half of September and early October.

Be prepared for the pre-Golden Week rush

Historically, the biggest challenge is not the holiday itself but the surge in demand leading up to it.

As manufacturers work to complete orders before shutdowns and importers rush to move cargo, vessel and flight capacity can tighten rapidly. Customers should expect:

  • Higher demand for available space.
  • Potential rate volatility.
  • Longer lead times for bookings.
  • Increased likelihood of cargo rollovers if bookings are made late
